Liverpool’s trio comprising Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, and Adrian are set to depart as their contracts expire during the upcoming summer transfer window, posing a challenge for newly appointed sporting director Richard Hughes to address gaps in the squad.
Hughes, recently appointed to the role at Anfield, faces a demanding initial transfer window. With the aim of bolstering Liverpool’s squad for a stronger contention in the Premier League next season, Hughes will oversee recruitment efforts once the market reopens later this year.
Thiago, Matip, and Adrian Expected to Depart
Hughes tasked with addressing squad voids
As confirmed by The Athletic reporter James Pearce on The Daily Football Briefing podcast, Liverpool anticipates the departure of Thiago, Matip, and Adrian, whose contracts are nearing conclusion by the end of the season.
“While there will undoubtedly be comings and goings in the summer, Hughes must assess each player’s commitment to Liverpool’s next chapter. The impending exits of Thiago, Matip, and Adrian highlight the need to fill gaps in the squad.”
Although these players haven’t played pivotal roles under Jurgen Klopp this season, Hughes faces the challenge of finding suitable replacements. Thiago’s injury-riddled campaign has limited his contribution, possibly lowering the priority for a replacement. Adrian currently serves as the third-choice goalkeeper, yet Liverpool risks a goalkeeping crisis without reinforcements in case of injuries.
Matip’s prolonged absence due to a knee injury has strained Klopp’s defensive options, underscoring the significance of finding a replacement. His injury has led to increased opportunities for young defender Jarrel Quansah, who has been thrust into action more frequently than anticipated.
